Some good news to tell you. Everyone loves potatoes but they are often very high GI (>90). However, one new variety, Carisma potatoes, have a consistently low GI (average 54, n >100). They have been grown and commercialised in Australia over the past few years. They have sold so well that it's hard to meet consumer demand. They were developed from conventional plant crossings of other potato varieties and tested in field trials in Australia. They have high yield, low water requirements and high pest resistance.
Agrico Ltd are now growing Carisma seed for the whole of Europe in Holland. Seed is then distributed to various countries as required. Seed production takes 4 years but all buttons have been pushed.
Agrico are currently physically growing Carisma in Italy for Southern Europe.
Agrico hopes to begin to distribute via their major supermarket within twelve months. They are currently negotiating with UK (TESCO) for UK and Eastern Europe. They will have the potatoes in all of those countries for trialling as soon as they are required, however, no they don't have distribution in place as yet.
If you would like Agrico to supply and grow seed in PREVIEW countries please let Graham Liney know ASAP.
Thanks & kind regards
Graham Liney will be in Holland in June 2013.
